Oil Boiler and Oil Furnace Filters
On a domestic oil burner, in addition to the nozzle filter and the filter built into the oil pump, there should be a separate filter in the suction line immediately before the pump. As far as replacing the filters are concerned, it is not good engineering practice to allow them to become so dirty that the burner stops. They should be replaced at least once a year, more frequently if the amount of oil used warrants it. During periodic maintenance work the suction line filter is not normally forgotten (perhaps because it is plainly visible), neither is the nozzle filter because it automatically becomes replaced when the nozzle is changed. However, care must be taken not to forget the built-in pump filter or strainer as this will clog also.

Oil Boiler and Oil Furnace Repair Service
When a oil heat repair service call comes in on whether the problem is intermittent or the fuel oil tank was simply allowed to run dry, we may suggest a precision tune-up first. Since we are not just preventative maintenance techs but seasoned expert troubleshooters of oil heat problems as well, this alleviates miss-diagnosis for air leaks, dirty filter problems, and ignition problems as well. Typically, unless the cause of an oil heat problem is obvious such as no spark from the high voltage transformer, or sold state ignition problems, or the low water level indication is on, a precision oil heat tuneup is in order. This assures that critical areas in oil heating are covered; less chance for a miss-diagnosis of the current problem, and the resulting benefit after correcting the repair problem is longer lived. This also allows screw ups by other oil heat service companies who have done previous lackadaisical oil service or repairs in the past to be properly corrected. There were times when we would go out on a no heat oil repair service call where prior technicians could not fix the problem and the owner downplayed the issue as something simple. As an example: there would be tracks all over the place by incompetent service personnel such as empty gas cartridges used to clear the oil lines or a clean oil filter with no oil in the canister. All of these are signs of a miss-diagnosis that our methodical way of a precision tune-up first always unfolds and is easily rectified by our procedure. Our oil heat service repair procedure is so well thought out and proven that not only do we guarantee the replaced component that we installed for your oil boiler, oil burner, or oil furnace for a minimum of one year, if it is coupled with a precision tune-up we normally also give free no heat emergency on labor service along with it. This free emergency oil heat service is usually for a minimum of one hour labor for an entire heating season or a one year period. That is how confident we are of our oil heat service protocol. This oil heat troubleshooting repair procedure is derived from our years of experience from servicing high end critical equipment and it is yours to benefit from.
One-pipe system on Oil Boiler and Oil Furnace Heating
The results of a technician forgetting to remove the two-pipe screw when replacing the oil pump that is for use on a one-pipe fuel oil fed system will be a little more tragic than removing the fuel pump bypass screw for a two pipe oil tank. Pressure in the nozzle line will rise violently and cause »excess dosing«, the pump shaft will eventually blow and cascade oil over the floor, and finally the resulting reluctance of the burner motor to turn will damage the motor and perhaps burn it out. That is why it is best to have a service oil person that is NATE certified on oil heat installation as well as oil heat repair service. At Handy Men of America we are both NATE certified on Oil Furnace Installation and Oil Service Repair. New Jersey Oil and Gas is an alternate name of Handy Men of America Inc. PRECISION OIL HEAT TUNEUP - WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU
Precision oil tune-up whether it is for a steam oil boiler, hot water oil boiler, or forced air oil furnace saves you money and makes your oil heating unit more reliable as well. A precision tuned oil heating system simply runs better and last longer than one that is not properly maintained. With the price of oil having risen in recent years, it makes even more sense to make your oil heating unit run at maximum efficiency. The money spent on a precision oil heat tune-up more than pays for itself in increased efficiency, performance, and longevity.
One of the ways efficiency is achieve is through a well-executed tune-up of the oil burner, combustion chamber, heat exchanger and the peripherals and extremities of the oil heating unit such as its insulation, circulation, flue pipe, and chimney. Very high efficiency oil boilers no longer require a chimney due to cooler exhaust.
A complete precision tune-up of oil heating systems does not have to be done all at the same time; it can be broken down in stages. However, it best to prioritize on areas that most definitely affect shutdowns due to reliability problems. Second on the list of an oil heat tune-up is to check/clean the heat exchange unit of an oil boiler or oil furnace. The heat exchanger of an oil boiler or oil furnace captures heat by absorbing the heat that is rising from the combustion chamber. If the heat exchanger is dirty or full of soot, then the rising heat just escapes through the chimney and more fuel oil is required to heat the same environment at the desired temperature.
Others on the list of a precision tune-up consist of checking for proper water level on oil steam boilers and periodically flushing out dirty water. Flushed too often, water leaves an undesirable mineral residue that is detrimental to the performance of oil boilers. With hot water oil boilers it should be purged of any air in the hot water piping to prevent water noise and uneven heating. Low water cut-off sensors should be cleaned and tested periodically for functionality. Water leaks and rusting pipes especially around the base of a steam boiler where the equalization tubing pipe and Hartford loop is should be promptly addressed. There are other aspects that a precision tune-up should address depending on the oil heat system being serviced. Even the replacement of batteries on a digital thermostat should be addressed.
In general, precision tune-ups are best left to true professionals that have the foresight to make a determination on what needs to be done to ensure that your oil heating unit runs more efficiently, economically, and reliably.
Residential & Commercial Oil Heat Maintenance
Fuel pumps that pump oil into heating equipment is a commonly miss-diagnosed item among oil heat repair service providers.
It is a very simple device that just has a set of metal gears and a pressure adjustment diaphragm but is not readily understood by the average oil tech rep.
Oil pump manufacturers report that half of the pumps being sent back have no problems.
Don't take a chance of being told that your fuel oil pump is bad and that it requires replacement. Why pay un-unnecessarily for an expense that is probably not needed?
